What is our Solar Plexus

Do you know what chakra is associated with digestion?

The Solar Plexus, the chakra located in our upper abdomen commonly referred to as the “fire in your belly” is associated with eating disorders, digestion issues and our personal power. Our solar plexus governs our motivation and self-esteem.

The Solar Plexus Chakra is known as Manipura in Sanskrit. It is the 3rd chakra of the 7 major chakras. This fiery chakra is yellow in color and located in the upper abdomen near the diaphragm. It is where the phrase “fire in your belly” stems from as its natural element is fire. This is our power center, our battery, and our sunshine. The mantra of the 3rd chakra is “I control”.  This is where our sense of personal power and inner strength comes from. It governs our willpower, motivation, self-esteem, and sense of self.

This chakra is associated with digestion and metabolism, so when it is out of balance, we may experience physical issues related to these areas. Eating disorders, heartburn, constipation, IBS, ulcers, and diabetes are just a few ailments related to the Solar Plexus.

When Manipura is well balanced, we feel empowered and have a sense of self-belief. When it is unbalanced, it can manifest as being pushy and arrogant, or a lack of confidence, motivation, or direction. We can be quick to anger, have a victim mentality, and/or display obsessive-compulsive behaviors.

There are many ways to help balance the 3rd chakra. Yoga positions that engage and strengthen the core as well as twists are beneficial. Poses such as Reclined Spinal Twist, Sphinx, Bridge, and Boat, ramp up the energy in this chakra. Focus on meditations that support and awaken the fire within. Including Essential Oils of cedar wood, bergamot, and rosemary can be useful in balancing the energies. Working with crystals the color of the sun: citrine, yellow jasper and quartz, and tiger’s eye can help awaken you to your purpose. If you have difficulty making decisions, start making small ones every day whether it be what to eat for lunch, what to wear, or what movie to watch. Spend time each day calling back your power and energies that you gave away throughout the course of the day.

When the 3rd chakra has a healthy flow of energy, you feel in control of your life, feel your power, and accomplish your dreams. Go forth and take control of your own destiny and happiness. Have confidence in who you are and live in your authentic self!
