Cashing in on spare change: 5 ways to make the most of your loose coins

What’s the best thing to do with that change jar? Find out with this quick article on making the most of your loose coins.

Every penny counts – isn’t that what they say? Well, if you’re like me, you have a change jar that sits there collecting dust. And my husband makes things worse…he has a whole change, DRAWER! That doesn’t include what’s in the couch cushions, under the car seats, and at the bottom of my purse. Why let the money sit around when it could be doing some good? So this year, I’m committed to making every penny, nickel, dime, and quarter count toward bigger goals that are aligned with my values. I believe that when money falls into my life, I should spend it in ways that create and multiply joy in the world – for myself and others! Here are some of my tips for making the most of your loose coins.

  • Please take it to the bank: While it may seem more convenient to use a CoinStar machine at your local grocery store, that convenience will cost you a sizeable chunk of your change. And when you cash in change in-store, it’s tempting to take the store’s gift card option… which means you’ll spend the money before you even make a plan for what to do with it! Instead, make it a point to make a bank run and let the teller dump your coin jar into the counting machine. There’s no charge to you, and you can deposit the money directly into your checking or savings account, so you have it in the right place to spend intentionally.
